Video editing cost in India depends on what you are making, who is making it and, less than most people expect, the city. Public 2026 guides put a reel at about ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 from a freelancer and a 3-minute corporate explainer at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 from one Pune agency, and a registered vendor adds 18% GST on top.
Search for video editing cost in India and you usually meet one average that hides three questions. What is being edited, a reel or a documentary? Who edits it, a freelancer, a studio or a salaried hire? And does the city matter when files travel by cloud?
This is a cost map, not a rate card. Our posts on hourly rates, Mumbai charges, hiring an editor and pricing video editing services each take one view. Here the pieces sit on one grid, with hidden costs and GST on services added. Pages were opened in October 2026.
How the video editing cost in India map is built
Three axes explain most of the spread. They are not equally well documented, and the table says how much evidence each one has.
| Axis | What it changes | Strength of public evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Deliverable | Hours per finished minute, finish level, number of versions | Moderate: several dated guides give rupee ranges by type |
| Provider type | Whether you pay for one person, a team, a platform or a payroll | Moderate: ranges exist, but many come from sellers |
| City tier | Salaries and studio overheads more than a freelancer's per-file price | Weak: little rupee data for freelance work by city |
Every rupee figure below comes from one author or one dataset. Read them as signals and compare at least two before you budget.
Why sources disagree, and how to benchmark them yourself, is covered in our post on the going rate for video editing. This post uses the figures to build a grid.
Deliverable by provider type: the main matrix
The matrix pairs freelancer benchmarks from Fueler's August 2026 guide with studio signals from IRPR (a Pune agency, July 2026) and Contra (a marketplace guide). A cell that reads "no figure" means we found nothing reliable, and we have not filled it.
| Deliverable | Freelancer benchmark (Fueler) | Studio or agency signal |
|---|---|---|
| Reel or short | ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 | IRPR: basic 1-minute clip from ₹500. Contra: single social posts ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 |
| Standard YouTube video | ₹3,000 to ₹10,000 | IRPR: basic editing from ₹500 a minute, which is about ₹5,000 for 10 minutes by arithmetic |
| Corporate or brand video | ₹5,000 to ₹15,000+ | IRPR: 3-minute explainer ₹15,000 to ₹50,000. Contra: standard corporate ₹25,000 to ₹1,50,000 |
| Long-form or documentary | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000+ | Contra: ₹1,00,000 to ₹10,00,000, which looks like full production, not editing alone |
| Monthly retainer | Junior ₹15,000 to ₹28,000; mid ₹30,000 to ₹58,000; senior ₹65,000 to ₹1.3 lakh | IRPR: ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 with set videos and priority support. Contra: social packages ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh |
Fueler calls its figures market benchmarks, not fixed price lists. Contra and IRPR publish their own ranges and have a commercial interest.
Where both columns give a range, the studio column runs about two to three times the freelancer column for the same label. For a corporate explainer, ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 against ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 is exactly three times at both ends. A team, review step and firm turnaround explain part of that. Different definitions explain the rest, so always ask what a quote includes before treating the gap as a premium.
City tier: what the data shows and what it does not
The clearest city evidence is about salaries, not freelance invoices. Fueler's April 2026 article gives annual pay for experienced salaried editors, which we divided by 12 for a monthly view.
| Market | Annual pay (Fueler) | Monthly, by arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | ₹8 lakh to ₹15 lakh | About ₹66,700 to ₹1,25,000 |
| Bengaluru (mid-level) | ₹6 lakh to ₹12 lakh | ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 |
| Delhi and Hyderabad | ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh | About ₹41,700 to ₹83,300 |
| Smaller cities and towns | ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh | About ₹16,700 to ₹41,700 |
These describe experienced salaried roles. Indeed's all-experience India average is far lower, roughly ₹18,600 to ₹18,700 a month, and the city averages from Indeed are in the going-rate post linked above.
Treat even this with care. Glassdoor's page shows single submissions that jump around: a 1 to 3 year editor in New Delhi at ₹31K to ₹40K a month, one in Mumbai at ₹9K to ₹11K, another in Bandra at ₹44K to ₹51K. One person is not a city.
For freelance work, the only city claim with a percentage is Contra's: Mumbai rates 20% to 30% above other Indian markets, and Chennai and Kolkata 15% to 25% below major metros. It gives no data behind either figure. For one city in detail, see video editing charges in Mumbai.
Four provider routes compared
| Route | How you pay | Public signal | What you manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global marketplace freelancer | Per hour or per project in US dollars | Upwork lists entry level below $30 an hour (median $10), mid $31 to $60, senior $61 to $150. Fiverr buyers pay a 5.5% fee, plus $3.50 under $200 | Brief, feedback, currency and platform fees |
| Freelancer based in India | Per video, per month | Fueler ranges above; Upwork's India page says mid-level Indian editors often charge $20 to $35 an hour | Brief, feedback, backup if they are unavailable |
| Studio or agency | Per project or monthly package | IRPR: ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 an hour for an agency with a large portfolio; ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 a month retainers | Less day-to-day management; scope in writing |
| In-house editor | Monthly salary | Indeed average roughly ₹18,600 to ₹18,700; Glassdoor ₹20K to ₹37K, median ₹25K (2026) | Software, hardware, leave cover, review time |
Upwork's own page gives conflicting overall figures, so use its level bands as direction only. Salary data suits only the last row: a freelancer also pays for software, idle weeks and tax, so the per-file price is not a salary divided by days.
Dollar rates are not an Indian budget anchor. Fueler's April article says an Indian brand may pay ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 for ad work for which a US brand pays $200 to $500, a reminder that the same edit has two price levels.
Hidden costs and GST on editing services
GST is the line most India-specific budgets miss. Busy's SAC page shows 18% for video and photographic processing services and Contra also says 18%. Whether it appears on your bill depends on the vendor.
- Registration threshold: ClearTax says service providers need to register when aggregate turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh a year, or ₹10 lakh in special category states. The GST Council's flyer describes how aggregate turnover is counted.
- Inter-state work: Notification 10/2017-Integrated Tax exempts inter-state service suppliers from registration up to the same limits. So an unregistered Delhi freelancer billing a Jaipur client below the limit generally adds no GST.
- Rush and revisions: IRPR cites a 20% to 50% rush premium and ₹500 to ₹2,000 per extra round beyond the two it says are typical.
- Stock and music: IRPR says it passes these on at cost plus a 10% to 15% handling fee. Other editors include a library track.
- Software: Adobe lists Premiere at ₹389 a month for the first 12 months, then ₹733.96, if you ever bring editing in-house.
| Example (assumed ₹10,000 quote) | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered freelancer | No GST charged | ₹10,000 |
| Registered studio, 18% GST | 10,000 x 1.18 | ₹11,800 |
| Registered studio, 20% rush, then GST | 10,000 x 1.20 = 12,000; x 1.18 | ₹14,160 |
| Registered studio, 50% rush, then GST | 10,000 x 1.50 = 15,000; x 1.18 | ₹17,700 |
The ₹10,000 quote is assumed. Ask whether a quote is before or after GST, and check with your accountant whether the tax can be set off in your own return.
From the map to a quote you can defend
Suppose a furniture brand in Jaipur needs six reels and one 3-minute explainer a month. The map turns that into two ranges to test quotes against.
| Route | Six reels | One 3-minute explainer | Monthly total before GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | 6 x ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 = ₹6,000 to ₹30,000 | ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 | ₹11,000 to ₹45,000 |
| Studio | 6 x ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 = ₹12,000 to ₹60,000 | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 | ₹27,000 to ₹1,10,000 |
Studio reels use Contra's single social post range. A registered studio at 18% GST comes to ₹31,860 to ₹1,29,800.
Step 1: Name the deliverables
Write the count, finished length, versions and languages for each video.
Step 2: Choose the provider type
Decide whether you need a person, a team or a salaried hire, using the routes table.
Step 3: Take the map range
Use the matching row and mark where your footage and finish level sit inside it.
Step 4: Add hidden costs
Add GST if the vendor is registered, plus any rush, licence or extra-version lines.
Step 5: Compare per finished video
Convert every quote to a cost per finished video and ask for a paid sample if two totals are close.
If the video editing cost in India you are quoted lands far outside the range, the likeliest causes are scope and not city: an unusual finish level, extra versions or a rush. Ask for the line items.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Often in rupee terms, though the evidence is thin. Fueler's April 2026 article gives one example: an Indian brand paying ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 for ad editing that a US brand pays $200 to $500 for. Specialist work may not follow that pattern, so compare the finished deliverable and what it includes, not the country.
Not reliably. Fueler's August 2026 guide says remote work makes location less important for freelancers, and no dated source gives smaller-city freelance rates. Salaries and studio overheads do differ, as the city table shows, so a studio quote may track its rent more than a solo editor's price does.
Busy's SAC page says services supplied to overseas clients under export conditions may be zero-rated, which would mean no GST is charged on the invoice. The conditions are technical, so a registered editor should confirm them with an accountant before invoicing, and a foreign client should ask for the invoice wording in writing.
Quarterly is enough. Note the date beside each source, because even Fueler's figures differ between its April and August 2026 articles. Keep your own invoices as a data point too, and drop any figure you cannot date. Our post on the going rate has a worksheet for that.
Final Thoughts
The short answer on video editing cost in India is a grid, not a number: deliverable, provider type and a small city effect, plus GST and add-ons where they apply. Build your range from at least two sources and test it against three live quotes.
If you would like a Delhi-based studio to quote against your brief, see video editing services in Delhi, listed From ₹3,999/month, or plan a month in how much for video editing services.
