Quick Answer

What is the going rate for video editing? In India there is no single going rate: public pages put employed editors near ₹106 to ₹146 a paid hour, freelance bands at roughly ₹300 to ₹3,900 an hour, and global marketplaces at $10 to $60. The useful move is to collect three or four dated sources, convert them to one unit and read the overlap.

Ask what is the going rate for video editing and you will be handed a number that is a few months old, from a different country, or measuring something else. Each public page counts a different thing: a salary, a seller's listing price, a studio's own rate card or a model.

This guide does not hand you one more number. It shows how to build your own benchmark: which sources exist, how old and how reliable they are, how rates move with experience and city, and a worksheet to turn it all into a range you can defend. Figures come from pages opened in October 2026.

What is the going rate for video editing, and why is there no single number

A going rate is the middle of what buyers actually pay, but video editing has no central price list. Instead you meet four different kinds of number, and mixing them is the commonest benchmarking mistake.

Kind of numberExampleWhat it measuresCost it leaves out
SalaryIndeed, GlassdoorWhat an employer pays an employee each monthSoftware, idle weeks, tax and client hunting

Studio or agency rateRate quoted in an agency articleWhat one agency says it chargesOften untested; the agency has a reason to publish it
Modelled estimateSoloHourlyA formula, not observed paymentsEverything real; it is a calculation

Only salaries and platform data come from many people. Studio and model figures come from one author, so read them as a single data point.

For the hourly angle on its own, see our guide to video editing cost per hour. Here the aim is wider: judge the sources, then judge the number.

A dated ledger of public sources

The table lists what we could open in October 2026, with the date each page shows. Where a page shows no date, the table says so, because an undated rate cannot be called current.

Rows 1 to 4 reuse the figures in our posts on Mumbai charges and hiring an editor, so numbers stay consistent across the site.

A quick reliability rule helps. Prefer sources with a visible date and a stated sample, treat single-author figures as one opinion, and drop anything you cannot place in time.

Rate bands by experience, side by side

Three sources split rates by experience. Lining them up shows where they agree and where they pull apart. Hourly figures are in rupees for the Indian sources and in US dollars for Upwork, as the pages print them.

LevelContra (₹ per hour)SoloHourly, direct clients (₹ per hour)Upwork worldwide (USD per hour)
Entry, 0 to 2 years₹300 to ₹600₹647 to ₹1,165Below $30, median $10
Mid, 2 to 5 years₹600 to ₹1,200 (3 to 5 years)₹1,165 to ₹1,915$31 to $60, median $40
Senior, 5+ years₹1,200 to ₹2,000₹1,915 to ₹3,882$61 to $150, median $100

Contra labels its mid tier 3 to 5 years. SoloHourly says platform rates average 20 to 40% below its direct-client numbers.

The midpoint of Contra's senior band is ₹1,600 and SoloHourly's is about ₹2,900, which makes SoloHourly roughly 1.8 times higher. Neither is wrong. One is a model built from US rates, the other a marketplace guide, so the gap is a method difference.

Per-project pay gives a second view. Fueler says editors at the 0 to 2 year stage often charge ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per project, and that a mid-level editor with three or four retainer clients can cross ₹1 lakh a month. Treat both as claims from one author, not survey results.

Rate bands by city tier

Editing travels by file, so city matters less for freelance quotes than for salaries and studio overheads. The one city comparison with a date and a sample is Indeed India, which lists these monthly averages.

CityAverage monthly payAbout per paid hour (176 hours)Against India average of ₹18,597
Noida₹25,749₹146About 38% higher
Bengaluru₹25,040₹142About 35% higher
Mumbai₹22,084₹125About 19% higher
Delhi₹21,386₹122About 15% higher
Mohali₹20,421₹116About 10% higher

Indeed's other city pages show older dates, so only these five, from its June 2026 update, are used. Mohali is the one smaller city listed.

Notice that even the smaller city sits above the national average, because the national figure includes towns the page does not list. The spread across metros is about ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 a month, which is far narrower than the spread between a beginner and a senior editor.

Other claims are weaker. Contra says Mumbai rates run 20 to 30% above other Indian markets and that Chennai and Kolkata offer 15 to 25% savings, but gives no data. For tier-by-tier cost, see our cost map for India.

Why two honest sources can disagree

The same city shows how easily sources diverge. Indeed's Delhi average of ₹21,386 a month is about ₹2.57 lakh a year. Fueler puts experienced salaried editors in Delhi and Hyderabad at ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh a year, and says smaller cities often pay ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh. Both can be true, because one averages all editors and the other describes experienced ones.

  • Unit: per hour, per finished minute, per video and per month are four different questions.
  • Seniority mix: an average of every title is pulled down by trainees; a senior band is pulled up by specialists.
  • Gross versus usable: a salary is before tax, and a freelancer's rate must also cover software, hardware and gaps between jobs.
  • Sample and age: fifty salaries or four profiles move with one outlier, and a page updated in June describes earlier hiring.
  • Currency and fees: dollar rates change in rupee terms daily and platforms deduct fees.
  • Tax: check whether a quote is before or after GST, as the cost map explains.

There is also a global anchor. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $75,420 for film and video editors in May 2025. It is a US employment figure, so use it to see why dollar clients pay more, not as an Indian target.

A benchmarking worksheet you can fill in

The steps below turn scattered numbers into one range. Work in rupees per hour, because it is the easiest common unit, then convert back to the unit you actually sell.

Step 1: Pick your lane

Choose the work type, such as reels, YouTube long form or ads, and your experience band. A rate for ads says little about reels.

Step 2: Collect three to five sources

Include at least one salary page, one marketplace page and one studio or guide page, and write the date beside each.

Step 3: Convert to rupees per hour

Divide monthly salary by 176 hours. Divide a per-video fee by your own hours for it. Convert dollars at today's rate and subtract platform fees.

Step 4: Mark the overlap

Draw the range that at least two sources share. Discard a source that is far outside the rest unless you can explain why.

Step 5: Adjust for your costs

Add your software, hardware, tax set-aside and unbilled hours, as in our pricing guide for video editing services.

Step 6: Test and date it

Quote the range to a few clients, note the replies, and revisit the sheet every quarter.

Leave the blank cells for your own figures.

Suppose a reel editor in Noida with one year of experience collects three figures: the Indeed Noida salary at about ₹146 an hour, Contra's entry band of ₹300 to ₹600 and a quote of ₹1,000 for a reel that takes about 3 hours, or about ₹333 an hour. The overlap between the last two is roughly ₹300 to ₹600, and the salary figure marks the floor. Those hours are assumed for the arithmetic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No public source we opened separates Hindi and English rates. Language shows up in extra work: captions, translation and checking spelling in each script usually add time, which is priced as a separate line. Ask whether subtitles and a second language are inside the quoted rate or billed on top before comparing two offers.

Marketplace and salary pages update through the year, and the pages above were last refreshed between April and October 2026. Individual rates tend to move when an editor's speed, niche or client list changes. A quarterly review of your worksheet is a reasonable rhythm, with a larger revision once a year.

Price in the currency of the client's budget. Fueler says a US-based brand may pay $200 to $500 for work an Indian brand pays ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 for, but dollar work also brings platform fees, conversion charges and bank costs that reduce what arrives. Work out the net rupee amount per hour before accepting either.

Check the unit first, then your scope. A quote built on 30 hours of editing will outrun an hourly salary equivalent. If the scope is right, explain the extras: motion graphics, multiple versions, fast delivery or usage rights. If you cannot name what justifies the gap, move the quote toward the shared range.

Final Thoughts

There is no single answer to what is the going rate for video editing, but there is a repeatable way to find yours. Collect dated sources, convert them to one unit, keep the overlap and adjust for your own costs. For a buyer, the same sheet shows whether a quote sits inside the market or outside it.
