Quick Answer

What do video editors charge? A base fee for the edit itself, plus add-ons that often decide the final bill: extra revisions, rush delivery, music licences, captions, extra aspect ratios and project files. One agency's 2026 article puts rush work at a 20% to 50% premium and extra revision rounds at ₹500 to ₹2,000 each, so compare totals, not headline prices.

Two quotes for the same video can sit thousands of rupees apart without either editor being unfair. One quote includes captions, a licensed track and a second round of changes. The other shows a low price and treats each of those as an extra.

This post is about the extras, not the base rate. For base figures, read our guides on hourly editing rates and hiring an editor. Here you get what each add-on is, how it is usually charged, which public numbers exist, and a worksheet for lining up quotes. Pages were opened in October 2026.

What Do Video Editors Charge for the Edit, and What Sits Outside It

A base fee usually covers cutting footage into a story, basic sound levelling, simple titles and one export. Anything beyond that is scope, and scope is where bills grow. Fiverr's video editor cost guide (August 2026) lists audio editing, captions and special effects among the work that raises the cost of an edit, and says tools or plugins outside an editor's standard setup may lead to extra charges.

The table below shows the usual add-ons, how they are normally billed and what public figures exist. Treat the figures as signals from single sources, not a price list.

Rush deliveryA percentage surcharge on the base feeThe same article cites a 20% to 50% premium; Fiverr says sellers can set premium rates for 24-hour, 3-day or 7-day deliveryWhat the standard turnaround is, and when the clock starts

Revisions and Rush Delivery

Revisions are the most common source of arguments. A revision is one round of consolidated comments on one version, not each message sent over a week. Fiverr's seller help article says Fiverr requires at least one revision option per package, and Upwork's hiring page advises agreeing the number of revision rounds in the project scope.

Some editors offer unlimited minor tweaks and cap the major rounds. IRPR Agency describes its standard package as two major revision cycles with unlimited minor tweaks. That is one agency's wording, but the split is a useful template: tweaks fix details, major rounds change structure.

Rush work is priced differently. The editor moves other jobs, works longer hours or skips a buffer day, and the quote reflects that. Take a ₹5,000 base fee. A 20% to 50% premium adds ₹1,000 to ₹2,500, so the rush total is ₹6,000 to ₹7,500. The premium is arithmetic on one agency's range, not a market rule.

Suppose a founder gets a launch video quote of ₹5,000 with one revision and a seven-day delivery. The launch date then moves two days earlier. Asking for the rush terms in writing, including whether the revision round still applies, avoids a surprise on the invoice.

  • Count revisions as rounds: one document of comments, with timecodes, equals one round.
  • Separate fixes from new ideas: correcting a spelling error is a revision; a new story is a new brief.
  • Start the clock on delivery of files: turnaround should begin when footage, brief and any advance have arrived.
  • Name the rush fee up front: agree the percentage before the deadline pressure starts.

Music Licensing: Who Pays, and for Which Platforms

The right question is not whether a track is free, but whether its licence covers your use. The table compares four common sources. This is general information, not legal advice.

SourceWhat the terms say (2026)What it means for the bill
YouTube Audio LibraryYouTube Help says videos in the YouTube Partner Programme can be monetised with Audio Library tracks. Creative Commons tracks need the artist credited in the description; standard tracks do notOften the cheapest route. The editor must note any credit line, and YouTube says only Audio Library tracks are known to it to be copyright-safe
Envato ElementsEnvato Elements lists plans from $16.50 a month billed annually (excluding local tax). Each download gives a licence for one specific project, and another project needs a new licenceFor client work, expect the licence to be bought per video or passed through at cost
Epidemic SoundEpidemic Sound's pricing page says ad campaigns are allowed only on the Pro or Enterprise planIf the video will run as a paid ad, ask which plan the editor holds
Instagram in-app musicEpidemic Sound's guide for brands says the main catalogue is licensed for personal, non-commercial use and that business accounts probably will not have access to itA trending track chosen in the app may not be available to a business account, so the editor should supply a track that is cleared

Epidemic Sound is a music licensing company, so read its guide as one vendor's view. Check each track's own licence before publishing.

Ask three things before accepting a quote: who buys the track, which platforms and ad formats it covers, and where the licence document is kept. Many editors include a library track in the base fee. The add-on appears when you want a commercial track or plan to boost the post as an ad.

Captions, Languages and Extra Aspect Ratios

Captions look like a small line item and often are not. Timing text to speech, fixing names and checking spelling in every language takes real editing time. Automatic tools help, because YouTube generates captions with speech recognition, but a person still has to check the result, especially for mixed Hindi and English speech.

Rev's pricing page gives an outside benchmark for caption services. At the listed $1.99 a minute for human captions, a 3-minute video comes to about $5.97. At $6.49 a minute for Hindi subtitles, the same video comes to about $19.47. An editor who captions inside the edit may bill differently, so use these only as a sense of scale. For tools and methods, see our guide to adding captions to videos.

Extra aspect ratios are the add-on buyers forget. A 16:9 edit is not simply cropped into 9:16. Faces, text and graphics move, and each version needs its own check. Upwork's hiring page tells buyers to state file format, resolution and aspect ratio requirements in the job post, which is the reason to list them before asking for a price. Dimensions per platform are in our social media size guide.

Suppose a ₹4,000 base edit needs vertical and square versions, and the editor prices each at an assumed 20% of the base. That adds ₹800 twice, or ₹1,600, for a total of ₹5,600. The percentage is an assumption for the arithmetic, so ask for the editor's own figure.

Source Files, Raw Footage and Ownership

Upwork's hiring page tells buyers to clarify ownership of licensed assets, project files and the finished video before work begins, and to settle whether Premiere Pro or After Effects project files will be delivered. That advice matters on the day you want a different editor to change one title.

  • Final video only: the usual base deal; you get exported files and nothing editable.
  • Project files included: useful if you may switch editors, but confirm the software version and where fonts and plug-ins came from.
  • Licence terms for the final cut: where and for how long you may use it, which is a contract point, not a pricing point.

A Quote-Comparison Worksheet You Can Copy

The question what do video editors charge only becomes comparable when every editor prices the same lines. Use one brief, then add the lines yourself. The example is hypothetical: a 90-second product video that needs a 16:9 and a 9:16 version, captions, and a licensed track. Every rupee figure is assumed for the arithmetic.

Line itemQuote AQuote B
Headline price₹4,000₹5,500
Revision rounds1 included; a second round ₹7502 included
Licensed musicNot included; ₹800Included
English captionsNot included; ₹1,200Included
9:16 version₹1,000₹800
Project filesNot includedNot included
Total for the same scope₹7,750₹6,300

Quote A: 4,000 + 750 + 800 + 1,200 + 1,000 = 7,750. Quote B: 5,500 + 800 = 6,300. The lower headline price ends up ₹1,450 higher.

Step 1: Write one scope list

List length, versions, languages, music use and the number of review rounds you expect.

Step 2: Ask for a line-by-line price

Request a figure or a written 'included' against every line, including project files.

Step 3: Add the totals yourself

Convert each quote to a total for the same scope, as in the table above.

Step 4: Compare turnaround and terms

Check when the clock starts, what a rush costs and how payment is split.

Step 5: Pay for a short sample if the gap is small

When two totals are close, a paid one-minute test shows pacing and how the editor handles feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It is usually a percentage on top of the base fee, so confirm it in writing before the deadline is set. Also ask what happens to review rounds on a rush job, since a compressed schedule leaves less time for them. Agree how quickly your feedback must arrive, because late comments can move the delivery date, and keep the extra cost on the invoice as its own line.

Unlimited revisions sound safe but are often priced into a higher base fee, and they can invite endless small changes. A cap is usually better for both sides. Choose two or three rounds, send one consolidated list of comments per round, and agree what an extra round costs. That keeps the schedule predictable and the editor motivated to finish the job.

It can be a starting point, not a finished job. YouTube's help page says automatic captions are created by speech recognition and appear in the video's default language only. Videos that mix Hindi and English, or carry names and product terms, need a human check. Burned-in captions for Reels and Shorts also have to be designed and timed in the edit.

Not necessarily. Payment for the final video does not by itself transfer editable files, fonts or licensed music. Ownership depends on what the quote or agreement says, so ask in writing whether project files are delivered, in which software version, and under what terms. If you may change editors later, make file handover part of the original price.

Final Thoughts

The honest answer to what do video editors charge is a base fee plus the extras you actually need. Revisions, rush delivery, music, captions, versions and files each move the total, and none of them is unreasonable if it is written down before work starts.
